We are constantly seeing new social networks popping up, with many being touted as the next alternative to Facebook. With every new network though, comes issues of privacy, data, advertisements, and money.

Welcome to Ello, the new platform that aims to fight all that negativity. According to their manifesto, they “believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce, and manipulate — but a place to connect, create, and celebrate life.” Ello is definitely not the most beautifully-designed site, or the most functional, but the buzz around the new platform is enormous. Could this finally be the social network that replaces the invasive nature of Facebook?

Ello was created by Paul Budnitz, the founder of Kidrobot, when he found that no social network had all of the tools he was looking for. He created the site with a team of designers and developers, and officially launched to users in July. Now, according to The Verge, they are receiving 40k sign-up requests per day. There are many features that current users dislike, and of course, there are many more things to be added. But for now, there seems to be some hope that this is the ad-free, anonymous, private network that we have been looking for since Edward Snowden first blew his whistle.
